Dry Stone Wall Construction

Traditional Dry Stone Wall Construction

This method of construction uses carefully selected stones, stacked without any mortar, to create a strong, durable, and visually stunning wall.

This ancient craft has been perfected over centuries and remains a popular choice for boundaries, garden features, and retaining walls due to its natural aesthetic and remarkable durability. Feel free to ask about the history I have discovered and the influences that have created these styles of dry stone walls. That will give us plenty to talk about while I'm on site..

Dry stone walls are flexible and can shift slightly without losing their integrity, making them particularly resilient to changes in weather and ground movement.

We have created a modern Construction Method of Dry Stone Walling using now readily available concrete and mortar.

The traditional method of dry stone walling is effective for low walls; however, over time, these walls may bend, twist, and shift, requiring maintenance. A modern choice for walls, particularly those over 5 feet is to include a concrete pad.

The modern construction method involves building off a concrete pad the wall is then reinforced internally with concrete, with the top stones bedded or set with cement. This approach ensures the structural integrity of the wall, preventing any movement or maintenance needs in the future. This also maintains the clean straight edges we now like to offer with our dry stone walls.

The Benefits of Dry Stone Walls

Dry stone walls are not just functional; they’re an investment in your property’s beauty and heritage. Here are some key benefits of choosing dry stone wall construction:

  • Durability - With proper construction, a dry stone wall can last for generations.
  • Aesthetic Appeal - Each dry stone wall is a unique piece of craftsmanship, blending seamlessly into natural landscapes.
  • Environmental Friendliness - Traditional dry stone walls are constructed using natural materials, making them an eco-friendly option.
  • Traditional Dry stone Walls Offer Flexibility - The interlocking stones allow the wall to flex with ground movement, maintaining their stock-proof ability even though twisted and warped. The modern method offers stretch rigidity and maintains the same structure and look over time.

We source the highest quality stones, often from local quarries, to match the natural beauty of your surroundings. Each stone is carefully chosen and shaped to fit perfectly into the wall.

We source the stones to best aesthetically match your area and project, often from local quarries, to match the natural beauty of your surroundings. Each stone is chosen and crafted to produce our unique style each wall being a work of art.

A solid foundation is essential for a stable wall. We clear the site of any vegetation and excavate a trench to provide a sturdy base. If required and through discussion with each customer we may decide a concrete footing is required. This ensures the wall remains level and strong for years to come.

We then craft the wall interlocking the stones for structure and looks. This technique requires a deep understanding of the materials and years of experience to achieve a seamless and durable structure.
